Tras conducir por la West Coast dirección sur tocaba de nuevo adentrarse en los Alpes del Sur.<br />

En Angelus Hut una familia kiwi nos había recomendado una de sus rutas preferidas en Nueva Zelanda y que llegaba hasta un refugio con unas piscinas naturales de agua caliente: Welcome Flat Hut en Coupland Valley. <br />
Estando en el pequeño pueblo de Fox Glacier Village nos decidimos a hacerla y reservamos la noche del refugio en la oficina del DOC.<br />

Coupland Valley Track fue construído entre 1901 y 1913 con fines turísticos para unir la villa de Mount Cook y el Heritage Hotel de la misma con la transitada <a href="http://caminerosehacecaminoalandar.blogspot.co.nz/2015/06/de-ruta-por-la-costa-oeste-de-nueva.html" target="_blank">West Coast</a>. La construcción fue lenta debido a que solo se podía realizar en los meses de verano pues era imposible mantener las obras en los severos inviernos e inundaciones que sufre esta zona alpina y que obligaban muchas veces a reconstruir largos tramos tras los parones invernales.<br />
<br />
El sendero comienza 36 km al sur de Fox Glacier por la West Coast Road y tiene 18 km de longitud hasta el refugio de Welcome Flat y según el Department of Conservation es de dificultad media estimándose el tiempo de recorrido en 7 horas.<br />
<br />
Tras aparcar el coche en el parking y empezar a hacer las mochilas comprobamos que la zona era un auténtico paraíso para las sandflies y en cuestión de minutos el coche quedó lleno de ellas por lo que si queréis hacer esta ruta más vale que vengáis preparados con un buen repelente y ropa larga.<br />
<br />
Una vez dejado el parking atrás tienes que cruzar el cauce de Rough Creek que puede variar mucho y muy rápido su caudal con lo que hay que prestar mucha atención. Para época de lluvias o de deshielo el río te obliga a desviarte 45 minutos río arriba y cruzar por un puente pero no fue el caso y saltando un poco lo cruzamos sin más problema y comenzamos a seguir las características marcas naranjas que indican el camino.<br />

Tras cruzar el río, la ruta atraviesa un bonito bosque de ribera que queda parcialmente inundado en primavera con el deshielo.<br />

Respecto al camino hay que decir que a pesar de los esfuerzos de los voluntarios del DOC por mantenerlo en buenas condiciones, tiene largos tramos del camino muy irregulares, cruces de riachuelos anchos y bastante barro por lo que te requiere concentración absoluta en cada pisada. Esto no es de extrañar porque la zona tiene 5000 mm medios de lluvia al año. <i>5 veces más que mi Asturias patria querida.</i><br />

Aproximadamente a mitad de camino se encuentra el pequeño y antiguo refugio de Architect Creek Hut que permite dormir a dos personas en caso de emergencia pero sin apenas facilidades pero que cuenta con una pequeña estufa para quemar leña y calentar los menos de 10 m2 de la pequeña habitación .<br />

Seguimos subiendo valle arriba y cada vez el río se ve más lejos.<br />

Llegó el momento del vértigo al cruzar dos puentes colgantes de mucha altura pero fue lo más interesante de toda la ruta y donde pudimos disfrutar de las vistas de estos valles de película.<br />

Por fin, tras 18 km valle arriba y cruzar varios puentes colgantes se llega a Welcome Flat. Un llano a mitad de camino en el valle</div>
</div>
El <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/west-coast/places/westland-tai-poutini-national-park/things-to-do/huts/welcome-flat-hut/" target="_blank">refugio de Welcome Flat</a> consta de dos plantas: la inferior donde está la cocina y el comedor que no disponen de gas por lo que hay que llevarse su equipo y la superior con 31 camas dispuestas en cuatro habitaciones. El edificio es muy acogedor y lo mejor está fuera a unos 100 metros del mismo, unas piscinas naturales de agua caliente. La noche en él cuesta 15$ (10€).<br />

Seguro que no os esperábais este tipo de piscinas naturales: no cubría más de cuatro palmos y si estás en ellas y quieres sobrevivir al ataque de las sandflies tienes que permanecer tumbado pero manteniendo siempre la cabeza fuera del agua por el riesgo de coger la letal meningitis amebiana.<br />

Tras el baño en las piscinas tocó cena en el refugio, siempre buen lugar para disfrutar conociendo a gente de todo el mundo y echando alguna partida de cartas a la luz de las linternas.<br />
Al día siguiente tocaba deshacer el camino hecho bastante más rápido con una pareja belga-findlandesa que llevaban muy buena marcha y llegamos al coche en menos de 5 horas.<br />

Para los más aventureros que busquen desafíos mayores se puede optar por seguir caminando valle arriba y recorrer el Upper Coupland Valley que sigue hasta los impresionantes refugios de Douglas Rock Hut(8 camas) a 7 km de Welcome Flat Hut, el alpino Coupland Shelter(4 camas) y llegar a Hooker Valley a las faldas del Aoraki -Monte Cook. Los crampones son necesarios.<br />

La costa oeste de la isla Sur comienza en Westport, a donde llegamos desde <b><a href="http://caminerosehacecaminoalandar.blogspot.co.nz/2015/05/robert-ridge-route-angelus-hut-nelson.html" target="_blank">Nelson Lakes</a></b>.
Allí hicimos noche el 25 de marzo en el Bazil`s Hostel, donde gracias al WiFi gratuito y su calidad aproveché para mostrar a familia y amigos que estaba vivo. En las cercanías de Westport hay una colonia de focas y parece ser una de las cosas más interesante de un pueblo que no parece tener mucho más que ver.<br />

Decidimos que quedaba para otra ocasión el conocer la parte norte de la costa oeste que se extiende hasta Karamea, cerca del comienzo occidental del <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/kahurangi-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/heaphy-track/" target="_blank"><b>Heaphy Track</b></a>, otra de las 9 Great Walks y que atraviesa el Kahurangi National Park. La gente habla maravillas de esta zona que la mayor parte de los viajeros no visita al tratarse de una carretera en forma fondo de botella y que suma más de 200 km en la ida y vuelta desde Westport.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">26 de Marzo: Westport- Punakaiki</span><br />
Desde Westport y bajando hacia el sur por la State Highway 6 fuimos hasta Punakaiki, la primera de las paradas obligatorias y famosa por las Pancake Rocks, unas formaciones rocosas con formas caprichosas que se recomiendan visitar en pleamar. Además, hicimos una de las rutas que te recomiendan en la oficina del DOC y que acabó siendo más larga de lo que esperábamos: el Pororavi River Track en la que en la primera parte de la ruta( y la única interesante) se puede contemplar la bonita garganta que hace el río en estos terrenos limosos.<br />

Seguimos hacia el sur e hicimos parada en Greymouth, un pueblo que no tiene nada de especial más que es recomendable llenar en él el tanque del coche ya que más al sur los precios se vuelven locos. Allí nos encontramos con Álex, al que habíamos conocido en Auckland y que tiene un <a href="http://reflejosdeunviaje.com/" target="_blank"><b>blog chulísimo</b></a> de sus viajes por todo el mundo que os recomiendo que sigáis.</div>

La noche la pasamos en un camping del DOC antes de llegar a Hokitika y comprobamos una vez más que son los lugares preferidos de los <b><a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallirallus_australis" target="_blank">wekas</a>.</b><br />
Estas divertidas aves no voladoras endémicas de Nueva Zelanda se dedican a mendigar comida en casi todos los campings en los que he estado.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">27 de Marzo: Hokitika</span><br />
Al día siguiente fuimos a Hokitika, la ciudad no tiene mucho más que ver que un montón de tiendas de Jade (Green Stone como la conocen aquí) por lo que fuimos a ver Hokitika Gorge, una garganta de aguas turquesaa 30 km de distancia del pueblo. La razón del color de sus aguas es debido a los sedimentos glaciares que transporta el río. Una ruta fácil de ida y vuelta de solo 30 minutos de duración pero que se puede convertir en una pesadilla si no llevas repelente para las sandflies que habitan en las orillas del río.<br />

Cerca de Hokitika Gorge se encuentra el espectacular y poco conocido <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/west-coast/places/lake-kaniere-scenic-reserve/" target="_blank"><b>Lago Kaniere</b></a> en el que descubrimos un camping increíble del Department of Conservation. Decidimos que era el sitio perfecto para dormir. De este lugar me llevo el recuerdo del que posiblemente haya sido el mejor atardecer que he visto en Nueva Zelanda junto con el que veríamos días después en Mueller Hut, en Mount Cook National Park. Os aseguro que las fotos no son fake. Esto es lo bueno de Nueva Zelanda, a veces descubres algo increíble en un lugar aleatorio nada turístico.<br />

Definitivamente la visita a este lago es muy, muy recomendable si se pasa por la West Coast. Merece mucho la pena hacer noche en el <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/west-coast/places/lake-kaniere-scenic-reserve/things-to-do/campsites/hans-bay-lake-kaniere-campsite/" target="_blank">camping de Hans Bay.</a> Os dejo un vídeo del mismo para que contempléis el lago con más perspectiva :<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">28 de Marzo: Lake Kaniere-Franz Josef Glacier</span><br />
Al día siguiente la carretera nos llevaba dirección sur hasta Franz Josef Glacier y el día no acompañaba mucho así que no pudimos hacer nada interesante. Tras un intento fallido de ver glaciar debido a la lluvia decidimos buscar cobijo en algún lugar y planificar la próxima ruta de montaña junto con Alessandra para cuando el buen tiempo llegase: el Coupland Valley Track. De alojamiento nos habían recomendado el Franz Josef Chateaux hostel para dormir y pudimos comprobar que era un buen lugar donde estar a salvo de las lluvias torrenciales que caían ese día en la zona. En el hostal te dan una rica sopa a las seis de la tarde y te dan un desayuno abundante gratis.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">29 de Marzo: Franz Josef Glacier-Fox Glacier</span><br />
Ya con mucho mejor tiempo por fin pudimos ver primero el glaciar Franz Josef y después el Fox. Ambos están situados en el Parque Nacional de Westland y son los dos únicos glaciares de los Alpes del Sur que descienden hasta solamente 300 metros sobre el nivel del mar.<br />
El glaciar Franz Josef tiene 12 km de longitud por los 13 km del Fox que se encuentra justo a las faldas del Mount Cook o Aoraki para los maoríes. Es muy triste y decepcionante ver como están retrocediendo desde 2009 debido al calentamiento global tras una etapa de crecimiento anterior. Lo mejor de la zona es contemplar los dos valles que han esculpido. Tengo que confesar que incluso para ser los primeros glaciares que veía, resultaron un poco decepcionantes así que no me quiero imaginar para alguien que haya estado en Chile, Argentina o Alaska.<br />

Después, con Alessandra de nuevo, nuestra amiga del Abel Tasman, fuimos a ver Lake Matheson, otra parada obligatoria en la zona y que es muy conocido por el espejo casi perfecto que refleja los alpes neozelandeses en sus aguas. A nosotros no nos dejó ver perfectamente los Alpes pero nos ofreció primero un Arco Iris y dos después.<br />

La noche en Fox Glaciar la pasamos los tres en el Ivory Tower Lodge, en el que disfrutamos de la mejor cocina de todos los hostales del país que conocíamos.<br />

Desde Takaka se accede por la Motueka Valley Hwy. Una carretera sin apenas tráfico y con unos valles agrícolas tan bonitos como desiertos.<i> Tras un tiempo en la isla sur ya tengo claro que cualquier carretera de aquí es impresionante pero los primeros días no te deja de sorprender los valles y ríos que ves en cada una de ellas. </i><br />

La puerta de entrada al Nelson Lakes National Park es St Arnaud, un pequeño pueblo a orillas del Lago Rotoiti. Al oeste del pueblo hay un camping gratuito del DOC señalado por la fantástica aplicación de <a href="http://www.campermate.co.nz/" target="_blank">Campermate</a> y allí pasamos la primera noche en la zona.<br />
<br />
A la mañana siguiente fuimos al Centro de visitantes del DOC, donde os pueden aconsejar infinidad de rutas que se pueden hacer en el que es uno de los parques nacionales menos famosos de la Isla Sur.<br />
Nosotros teníamos claro que queríamos ir hasta Angelus Lake y hacer noche en el refugio y para ello puedes escoger <a href="http://doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/nelson-lakes-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/angelus-hut-tracks-and-routes/" target="_blank">tres rutas alternativas</a>:<br />
- Robert Ridge Route<br />
- Speargrass Track<br />

Nos decantamos por el Robert's Ridge Track, de 12,2 km de distancia porque es la que te brinda mejores vistas ya que recorres la mayor parte del camino por una arista entre dos valles.<br />

Abandonamos Saint Arnaud en dirección Mt Robert carpark, donde se deja el coche. Desde allí, la ruta comienza haciendo zig zags para ganar altura atravesando en el primer tramo unos bonitos hayedos. Hay que señalar que la ruta es bastante exigente al principio puesto que tienes que salvar casi todo el desnivel en la primera hora y media de camino(500 m de desnivel de los 900 que tiene la ruta). <i>Mejor eso que dejar todo el desnivel para el final como hace la Speargrass Track.</i><br />

Aunque había amanecido soleado, una vez alcanzamos la arista, un viento invernal nos recordaba que el verano se estaba acabando. A partir de este momento, la ruta pasa a ser de grava y en algunos tramos largos toca caminar entre pedreros aunque de buen agarre y sin apenas piedra suelta.<br />
El día no era espectacular pero las vistas de los valles a la derechaa y sobre todo a la izquierda del camino eran increíbles.<br />

Y tras pasar por algún tramo más de pedreros, tras cinco horas de ruta, una menos de lo estimado inicialmente, llegábamos a Angelus Hut que es posiblemente el refugio más bonito en el que he estado nunca junto con el <a href="http://www.refugiojoudeloscabrones.com/" target="_blank">Refugio del Jou de los Cabrones</a>. Parece que el de <a href="http://www.colladojermoso.com/" target="_blank">Collado Jermoso</a>, que está por descubrir y será una de las primeras rutas de montaña que haga cuando vuelva a España, será una buena competencia.<br />

Nos quedaba una pequeña bajada hasta el refugio, no sin antes contemplar algún que otro lago glaciar que nos habían amenizado la caminata por la cresta. En Angelus Hut conocímos a Sally, de Australia y tras un breve descanso en el refugio, Patrick, Sally y yo nos animamos a subir a alguna de las cumbres que rodean el lago.<br />

Tras dar unas vueltas por unos caminos sin marcar, conseguimos llegar a una collada y desde allí pudimos ver el otro gran lago de la zona: Lake Rotoroa. La subida es muy recomendable, incluso en días de viento como el que nos hizo.<i> Yo me quede con las ganas de intentar alguna otra ruta como la subida a Mount Angelus y coger más altitud así que no va a quedar más remedio que volver a Nelson Lakes National Park lo largo de este año.</i><br />

Toca hablar del <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/nelson-lakes-national-park/things-to-do/huts/angelus-hut/" target="_blank">refugio</a> de Angelus Hut. Es uno de los más modernos de Nueva Zelanda ya que se construyó en 2010, está situado a 1650 metros de altura y cuenta con 28 camas situadas en dos habitaciones y una sala que hace de cocina y salón. Los baños se encuentran fuera como siempre. El calor de la chimenea es muy agradecido por la tarde noche y ayuda mucho a secar tu ropa en caso de que el tiempo no te haya acompañado o hayas sudado la gota gorda. Solo cuesta 20$ dormir en él y seguro que somos más de uno los que preferimos esto a un 5 estrellas.<br />

Decidimos que el día nos obligaba a volver al aparcamiento por la misma ruta, la Robert´s Ridge, porque podríamos ver mucho mejor la zona.<br />

Tengo que aprovechar este post para agradecerle de nuevo a Sally el chocolate y el té que me dió en el refugio y sobre todo los milagrosos compeed que evitaron que las ampollas que me hicieron los calcetines y las botas el día anterior fueran a más.<br />
La ruta de vuelta nos volvió a dejar contemplar toda la belleza de Nueva Zelanda en esta zona que entraría desde este momento en una de las más recomendables aunque por algún motivo desconocido no sea muy famosa.<br />

Recomendaciones:</div>

- La zona de Nelson Lakes merece muchísimo la pena y es parada obligatoria si vas del norte de la isla sur(Abel Tasman National Park y Nelson) a la West Coast.<br />
- Otra ruta muy apetecible por la zona es la que va a <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/nelson-lakes-national-park/things-to-do/huts/blue-lake-hut/" target="_blank">Blue Lake</a> pero requiere de más días. Si pasáis por la zona, estaría bien contemplarla como otra opción aunque </div>
- Acerca de la ruta toca decir que es muy recomendable, que es más o menos de la misma dificultad que el <a href="http://caminerosehacecaminoalandar.blogspot.co.nz/2015/04/tongariro-alpine-crossing-y-finde-en.html" target="_blank">Tongariro Alpine Crossing</a> y que te deja con ganas de seguir descubriendo este paraíso llamado Nelson Lakes National Park.<br />
- Sobre el refugio os recomiendo que no lo reservéis con antelación sino que preguntéis el mismo día por la mañana en la oficina del DOC en St Arnaud porque con mal tiempo no es recomendable hacer ninguna de las tres rutas posibles.<br />

Llegaba el turno de uno de los lugares más turísticos de Nueva Zelanda. Tras pasar una noche en Nelson acabamos de programar lo que sería mi segunda Great Walk tras el Tongariro Alpine Crossing: el <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/abel-tasman-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/abel-tasman-coast-track/" target="_blank">Abel Tasman</a>. 53 km de playas paradisiacas. Madrugamos y a las 10 estábamos en Tile Shelter en Marahau, cerca de Motueka.<br />

Llegamos a Torrent Bay con la marea baja y pudimos cruzar parte de la bahía andando no sin antes disfrutar de las Cleopatra Pools. Aunque yo no me tiré, me comentan que te puedes tirar por el tobogán natural que hacen y es divertido. <br />

El camping de Torrent Village es muy sombrío, con sandflies(como todo el Abel Tasman) y unos baños un poco deficientes pero la playa y la bahía lo compensan. La anécdota de la primera noche fue que a Patrick un ratón/rata en su lucha por conseguir parte de una barra de proteínas, hizo un agujero en la mochila.<br />

El cielo era completamente azul y la temperatura veraniega. Empezamos a caminar e hicimos la primera parada del día en Sandfly Beach y la segunda en Bark Bay, una bahía de aguas turquesas. En la playa me di mi primer baño en South Island y nos encontramos por casualidad de nuevo a Timo, que se había despedido de nosotros en Turangi. Nueva Zelanda a veces parece un pueblo, un gran pueblo de veraneo de alemanes.<br />

Después de Bark Bay le tocaba el turno a la que probablemente es la playa más impresionante de todas: Onetahuti Beach. Playa de aguas cristalinas que recorres al completo por la arena antes de subir a las colinas de nuevo en dirección Awaroa.</div>

Seguimos el camino preocupados porque sobre las 4:30 teníamos que estar en Awaroa para poder cruzar el estuario con la marea baja. Esta es la parte de la ruta que condiciona el resto por la marea ya que solo puedes cruzar una hora antes y después de bajamar.<br />

Justo después de cruzar Awaroa llegamos al camping, otro camping que volvía a estar lleno de sandflies. Montamos la tienda y a dar el último chapuzón del día.<br />
La primera anécdota fue que mientras me bañaba en la paradisiaca playa de Waiharakeke(pegada al camping) y estaba hablando del respeto que le tengo al mar y a los tiburones en Nueva Zelanda tras leer que un surfista murió por un ataque ese mismo mes y una sombra de un metro de largo se movió justo a mi lado. Tardé un segundo en reconocer que era la silueta de una raya enorme y acabar tomándome a risa el susto del mes.<br />

En el camping cenamos con Alesandra, de Italia, que viajaba sola por NZ después de acabar su doctorado en Melburne.<br />

Habría una anécdota más por la noche: habíamos visto a los <a href="http://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalangeriformes" target="_blank">possums</a> en acción durante la cena, habían hecho dos pequeñas incursiones acercándose a la basura a menos de dos metros de nosotros así que decidimos dormir con basura y la comida dentro de las tiendas. En medio de la noche, escuché como uno estaba justo al lado de mi cabeza, al otro lado de la tienda y grité para auyentarlo. La sorpresa fue que él gritó más y peor y así fue como entre los dos despertamos a todo el camping. Por suerte fue la última incursión, esos animales no son tan dulces como aparentan.<br />

Totaranui tiene un camping inmenso y es donde el aqua taxi nos iba a coger de vuelta a las 3:15. Como nos sobraba tiempo decidimos ir hasta la próxima playa más al norte: Anapai Beach. La playa compite con Onetahuti. Es impresionante y la tenemos enterita para los tres para dar un paseo. Al final como buen asturiano que huele la lluvia, decidimos volver a Totaranui.</div>

Adelantamos el aqua taxi en Totanui y volvimos mientras caía el diluvio sobre nosotros. <br />
Así acaba el Abel Tasman, con el tiempo respetándonos completamente la caminata aunque haciéndonoslo pagar en el barco. <br />

Consejos prácticos:<br />

- Sin conocer como es la península del norte de Anapai, la parte más interesante del Track para mí es a partir de Torrent Bay cuando empiezan las playas más bonitas como Bark Bay o la impresionante bahía de Awaroa. Así que recomiendo como base de partida Totaranui en vez de Marahau si solo tenéis uno o dos días para hacer el Track.<br />
<br />
- Una ruta más que recomendable, no creo que haya muchos más trekkings de playa en el mundo tan increíbles como este pero como todo lo que se trata de paisajes y especialmente en Nueva Zelanda depende mucho del tiempo. Con mal tiempo puede decepcionar un poco.<br />
<br />
- Nosotros hicimos la ruta 17,18 y 19 de abril y creo que fue un acierto. Reservamos con 3 días de antelación ya que fuimos de camping que es mucho más flexible que los huts. En esta temporada puedes disfrutar de buen tiempo y ahorrarte las hordas de turistas que hacen el Track en verano.<br />
<br />
En definitiva, es lógico que el Abel Tasman sea considerado un "must" si vienes a Nueva Zelanda.</div>

Con el coche ya arreglado comenzamos el viaje rumbo al oeste desde Turangi. A una de las prioridades de Nueva Zelanda: el Volcán Taranaki. Desde Turangi-Taupo hay que ir dirección norte hasta Taumarunui donde empieza la Carretera 43, más conocida como la Forgotten World Highway y que acaba en Stratford. 148 km con una parada a medio camino: Whangamomona.<br />

La carretera no puede tener más curvas pero te premia con unos paisajes de película.<br />
Puedes ver desde las colinas más caprichosas, desfiladeros con árboles en lugares imposibles y multitud de llanos plagados de ovejas. Es uno de esos lugares donde queda evidente de que la proporción de ovejas por persona en NZ es 10 a 1.<br />
<br />
La carretera pasa muy cerca del Whanganui National Park donde tengo pendiente hacer una de las 9 Great Walks que consiste en recorrer <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/manawatu-whanganui/places/whanganui-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/whanganui-journey/" target="_blank">150 km de kayak </a> por el río que da nombre al parque nacional y que es el tercero más largo de Nueva Zelanda con sus 290 km de longitud.<br />
Pero lo mas interesante del trayecto es la parada obligada en <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whangamomona" target="_blank">Whangamomona</a>. Esta singular autodenominada república de 30 habitantes tiene el derecho a sellarte el pasaporte en la misma hoja que NZ. El único edificio abierto al público del pueblo hace las veces de restaurante, hotel y aduana. Es curioso, pagando unos simbólicos 2$ te estampan un sello bastante más chulo que el de NZ. </div>

La carretera acaba en Stratford donde acaba en un día despejado puedes pararte a contemplar las vistas del cono casi perfecto del Taranaki.<br />
Aquí giramos al noroeste rumbo a New Plymouth. Y desde allí nos acercamos a los White Cliffs, unos 30 km al norte de la ciudad y que son una maravilla para dar un paseo o si tienes tiempo, para hacer alguna de las rutas más largas que hay por el litoral.<br />

Al día siguiente, los coletazos del Tifón Pam que había arrasado <a href="http://www.teinteresa.es/mundo/Vanuatu-mundo-arrasado-tifon-Palm_0_1321068343.html" target="_blank">Vanuatu</a> con decenas de muertos se dejaron notar. Ojalá esas islas se recuperen aunque el calentamiento global las esté condenando a muerte.<br />

Seguro que estáis cansados de ver un círculo perfecto que hace el parque nacional y que pone en evidencia los destrozos que comentemos. También en el último país del mundo en ser descubierto.<br />
Alrededor del Taranaki puedes hacer muchas rutas pero la que nos interesaba es la que sube hasta la cumbre y esta parte de North Egmont donde está el edificio central del Parque nacional.<br />

Tras postponer la misión para otro momento por culpa del Tifón fuimos hasta Wellington.<br />
<br />
En la ciudad del viento es muy recomendable la visita al museo interesantísimo y gratuito(en NZ = sagrado) de Te Papa donde se puede ver el mayor Colossal Squid que me hizo acordarme del paisano Luis Laria y de <a href="http://www.cepesma.org/" target="_blank">Cepesma</a> y de su imprescindible labor en el Mar Cantábrico.<br />
Para dormir en Wellington recomiendo el hostal Nomads Wellington. Está genial aunque no tenga WiFi porque tiene cena gratis en el bar de al lado.<br />
La siguiente noche la pasamos en Kaitoke Regional Park, a 5 min de Rivendell.<br />
No pudimos ver a Arwen, Légolas o Elrond y fue bastante decepcionante ver que lo único que queda de la película son los árboles originales que aparecen en alguna escena. Aun así el parque regional de Kaitoke tiene algun paseo interesante y paisajes espectaculares a 40 minutos en coche de la capital de Nueva Zelandalos.<br />

Al día siguiente, cogí el ferry a Picton y crucé el estrecho de Cook. <br />
Mientras el ferry abandonaba Wellington se notaron mucho las olas y estuvo muy divertido. Me acordé del viaje con mis primos Marta, Miguel y María por Irlanda y de la aventura de cruzar en barco desde Galway a <a href="http://www.aranislands.ie/" target="_blank">Aran Islands</a> (Una visita que recomiendo muchísimo a los que estén pensando en viajar a Irlanda).<br />
Después se tranquilizó y según nos acercábamos a la isla sur, la suerte nos daba la bienvenida: dejamos las nubes, el viento y el frío atrás y nos recibía el calor y el sol.<br />

La ruta más famosa que recorre la zona es la <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/marlborough/places/queen-charlotte-sound-totaranui-area/things-to-do/tracks/queen-charlotte-track/" target="_blank">Queen Charlote Track</a> de 70 km y que se completa en 3-5 días. <i>La tengo pendiente para más adelante</i>.<br />
Al final de trayecto el ferry atracó en Picton, un pueblo de aproximadamente 2700 habitantes que se encarga de ser con mucho encanto la entrada y la salida al paraíso. <br />
<br />
Por fin estaba en South Island y queda mucho viaje por delante.</div>

Mi tiempo en Auckland se podría resumir en academia de inglés, nuevas y buenas amistades y lavandería. </div>

Estando allí había llegado a hacer el training en un restaurante español y tenia muchas esperanzas en que me cogieran. No fue así y al día siguiente del no, mientras ponía y quitaba lavadoras y secadoras, decidí que lo que tenía que hacer era irme de viaje con Patrick. Un amigo americano que habíamos hecho del grupo del Newton Lodge y que se iba a viajar con su coche por NZ. Eran todo ventajas: me caía bien, también tira para el monte, podría practicar inglés viajando con él y la idea de encadenar dos inviernos seguidos no me entusiasmaba. Así es que acabe la jornada de laundry y me saqué el billete de autobús para Taupo para el día siguiente.<br />
El viaje a Taupo no es que fuese muy interesante salvo por un steak pie que comí a medio camino. Cuando llegué a Taupo y quedé con Patrick conocí a Timo, un alemán que viajaba él.<br />
Al día siguiente íbamos a hacer el Tongariro por lo que nos acercamos a la zona del Parque Nacional hasta que el piloto de que la batería no se estaba cargando se encendió.<br />
Empezaba bien la aventura coincidiendo con un día de tormenta. Patrick nos intento acercar a Timo y a mi al parque para que acampásemos cerca y poder hacer "hitchhiking" pero casi nos quedamos tirados en medio del parque nacuonal: la nada. Pudimos llegar a Turangi donde había un mecánico y pasamos la noche allí durmiendo en la tienda de campaña de Patrick en un camping bastante caro. <br />
Timo y yo madrugamos y a las seis estábamos haciendo hiche hiking. Unos argentinos majísimos nos cogieron a las 7. Hicimos casi todo el Tongariro Alpine Crossing con ellos. Ojalá me los vuelva a encontrar por NZ.<br />
La <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tongariro-alpine-crossing/description/" target="_blank">ruta</a> son 23 km,empezamos a las 8:24 de la mañana, comienza llaneando hasta que te abrasa con la primera subida con un gran desnivel. Aunque el día empezó perfecto, se fue nublando y dejamos de ver el Mount Doom. Donde Frodo tiró el anillo, vamos.<br />
Caminando con Timo conocí a un alemán que entre otras perlas soltó que los alemanes dan dinero a España para que podamos echar la siesta y que poco menos vivimos del cuento y gracias a ellos. Ya sábeis, como los andaluces viven a costa de los catalanes.<br />
A mitad de camino, el track te permite girar y subir al Tongariro sin mucha dificultad y que en días claros puedes contemplar Mount Doom y gran parte del Parque Nacional. No fue el caso porque las nubes nos lo impidieron. <br />

Esta parte del Trekking es un poco monótona porque ves siempre lo mismo: el lago Taupo, el volcán Pihanga(amante del Taranaki y que obligó a este a huir hacia el oeste y quedarse aislado del resto de volcanes según cuenta la leyenda maorí) y el lago Rotoairi (más cercano y mucho más pequeño que su hermano mayor).<br />

El ultimo tramo atraviesa un bosque. Para volver Patrick no tenía el coche aún y tardaría algo más en arreglarse por lo que tuvimos que hacer autostop de nuevo pero solo nos llevo 10 minutos que unos alemanes nos cogieran y nos dejaran de vuelta en Turangi. <br />
Era viernes y quedamos con Patrick, sacamos cosas del coche que iba a quedar todo el finde en el taller y pasamos la noche en un hostal donde conocimos a un mexicano-asturiano muy majo.<br />

Vimos un cielo impresionante de nuevo y a la mañana siguiente Timo se despidió porque no le compensaba esperar como nosotros hasta el lunes y siguió viajando hacia el este. <br />
Nosotros quedamos en casa de Olly haciendo Couchsurfing la noche del sábado y el domingo. Olly nació en Hong Kong, es ingeniero civil pero está estudiando para ser monitor de deportes de aventuras en Turangi.<br />
El finde se resume en paseo y baño por el río Tongariro en las afueras de la ciudad, inmersión total de inglés con Olly, Selly, y los amigos de Olly: maories incluidos. Y los que os los imagináis en taparrabos os confundís. <br />

Habíamos dejado el viaje en mi primera experiencia de Couchsurfing en Devonport, al norte de Auckland City.</div>

Estando en casa de Luis, me animé a ir hasta la Isla de Rangitoto y disfrutar del maravilloso día de verano. <br />
Cogí el ferry en Devonport que te lleva hasta el último volcán de Auckland District que erupcionó hace 600 años y creó por completo la isla con el mismo nombre, Rangitoto.<br />

La isla está plagada de <a href="http://http//es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrosideros_excelsa">pohutukawas</a>, endémicos de Nueva Zelanda y que en diciembre cuando florecen, pintan la isla de rojo. Subí hasta la cima y mientras cogía altura, las vistas de la bahía de Auckland mejoraban. </div>

Desde la cima del volcán, a 260 metros de altura, pude ver la Isla de Mototapu y me decidí a ir. Una caminata curiosa aunque desde Motutapu las vistas de Rangitoto eran impresionantes.<br />

Para volver a coger el ferry hice el Coastal Track que se me hizo un poco largo y que al ir entre bosque todo el rato se hace un poco monótono por lo que tampoco es algo muy recomendable. Para acabar, cogí el último ferry a Auckland. </div>

La semana no acababa ahí. Antes de salir de España me había apuntado a un evento de Couchsurfing que coincidía con mi primer fin de semana en Aotearoa. Era un viaje a la península de Coromandel pero solo estaba concretada la noche del sábado en The Pinnacles Hut. <br />
Vía FB me puse en contacto con Tineke Waters que me iba a llevar en coche desde Auckland hasta allí y me recogió el sábado por la mañana. Teníamos que recoger a 3 personas más en diferentes zonas de Auckland y mientras tanto fuimos hablando sobre los mejores rutas de montaña en NZ, ella me sugirió muy seriamente el Routeburn Track y ahora no me quito de la cabeza la idea de hacerlo. Condujimos hasta Coromandel y los treinta y pico que eramos empezamos la ruta: <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/coromandel/places/coromandel-forest-park/things-to-do/kauaeranga-kauri-trail/" target="_blank">Kaueranga Kauri Trail</a> dirección The Pinnacles.<br />

La ruta es impresionante, al principio la vegetación se asemeja a una selva y pudimos ver alguno de los <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathis_australis" target="_blank">kauris</a> que se salvaron de la tala masiva a partir de finales del siglo XIX. Este árbol es el más grande de NZ y tengo pendiente subir al morte de North Island a disfrutar del santuario de estos árboles. En la ruta, además de naturaleza me presentaron a los mejores sevillanos que te puedes encontrar en Nueva Zelanda y que desde ese fin de semana pasaron a ser parte importante de mi familia en NZ: Alex y Pili.<br />

Alcanzamos el refugio y las vistas desde él eran impresionantes. El plan era subir a The Pinnacles a ver el atardecer por lo que esperamos hasta las 7:30 y empezamos a subir lo que nos quedaba hasta la cumbre. La subida tiene algún tramo interesante con escaleras o pequeñas trepadas que lo hacen muy divertido. Después de llegar arriba, solo puedes decir una cosa del paisaje y del atardecer: "awesome".<br />
Dormir en el <a href="http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/coromandel/places/coromandel-forest-park/things-to-do/pinnacles-hut/" target="_blank">refugio</a> cuesta 15 $ y se pagan muy a gusto, aunque solo sea por eso.<br />

Al día siguiente, los mosquitos me forzaron a ver el amanecer así que les hice caso. No fue tan impresionante como el anochecer pero no estuvo mal. Al fondo la costa de Coromandel que me queda pendiente de momento.<br />

Después de ver el amanecer y prepararnos, bajamos por el mismo camino y salvo que dos chicas que se perdieron y acabaron en la otra punta de la Península de Coromandel, no hubo ningún incidente más. A la vuelta dejamos a gente por Auckland y Tineke me invitó a cenar a su casa de Devonport antes de coger el ferry de vuelta a Auckland. Increíble la cena con su familia y con Michele que también había hecho la ruta con nosotros. No podía acabar mejor la primera semana en Nueva Zelanda, había visto de todo, hecho amigos sorprendentemente rápido y me sentía muy a gusto estando tan lejos. </div>

Oviedo a Madrid. El norte de España soporta esa semana el peor temporal del año
y afecta enormemente a las comunicaciones en Asturias. No se podía ir en tren
hasta León debido a que un gran alud bloqueaba un tramo importante de la vía por
lo que salimos de Oviedo en un autobús fletado por Renfe. Logramos cruzar a
duras penas el Huerna a las 8 de la tarde y apenas media hora después la

un tren que parece que bajará a Madrid. Tras casi tres horas y anuncios por parte de Renfe de que dormiremos en León, conseguimos salir de la estación
y llegamos a Madrid con 3 horas de retraso. Como anécdota diré que me olvidé en
el tren la bolsa en la que había tenido mi pasaporte todo el viaje y por suerte, a 30 minutos de llegar a Madrid había decidido sacarlo. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Adolfo Suárez - Istambul Sabiha Göçen con Pegasus Airlines(compañía barata, de
buena calidad y muy recomendable para viajar hasta y por Turquía) por 89 €. En
el aeropuerto coincido con Laura y me despido de ella, viaja rumbo a Sevilla para
pasar no se sabe cuántos meses surcando los mares(de momento sigue en ello rumbo Glasgow).<o:p></o:p></span></div>

el hostal conocí a una pareja muy maja chileno-francesa con los que estuve

que más me gustaron en la visita a Estambul en marzo 2014 como la Mezquita Azul
o la Mezquita de Fatih. En la mezquita del Príncipe me ofrecí a sacar una foto a
un grupo heterogéno de hispanos(3 argentinos, una venezolana y una española) y
acabé pasando una muy buena mañana con ellos. Espero volver a ver a Nico y a

hacerlo solo y con un billete de avión lo suficientemente barato como para
dudar de él. Por lo tanto, me planté en el aeropuerto de Ataturk con más de
seis horas de antelación. El primer
vuelo era Estambul-Urumqi(China) y facturé sin ningún tipo de problema con
China Southern Airlines mi billete sacado con TripAir y encontrado en
Skyscanner, el pero fue que no me dejaron facturar la maleta hasta Auckland. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">El miedo volvió cuando me tocó enfrentarme al control de
pasaportes en China pero no hubo problemas. Además, una uigur muy maja que
conocí en el avión me echó una mano por el aeropuerto a 30 º C de la fría y
nevada Urumqi. <i>Un poco más cerca, estaba
en China.</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 18px;">Por fin me subí al último avión. Era el vuelo más más largo(10:30 horas), me dieron de cenar, de desayunar y escuché varios discos cortesía de la compañía. Definitivamente China Southern Airlines me enamoró porque el vuelo me pasó muy rápido y te alimentan de cine, aunque no sepas lo que estas comiendo.</span></div>

después de salir de casa. Por fin estaba en Nueva Zelanda, solo y con mi inglés
digno de un recién bajado del monte. <i>Se
demostró que se puede viajar a las antípodas chapurreando el peor de los ingleses
imaginable</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

oportunos con un par de preguntas sobre mi viaje con origen en Estambul y no me
hicieron limpiar las botas de montaña como le había hecho a algún compañero de
la WHV. Fui previsor, las llevaba limpias y además la kiwi del control debe de tener una imagen de que España es como Almería y que era casi imposible que las botas tuviesen barro. <i>No penséis que en NZ tienen a
frutas haciendo controles, aquí los neozelandeses se denominan kiwis y la fruta
es el kiwifruit.</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>

de salir del aeropuerto me subí a un bus que en vez de ir a Auckland, me acabó
llevando a la terminal del aeropuerto de vuelos nacionales. Así de empanado lleguaba a NZ. Allí, después ir al baño y cuando estaba a punto de coger el autobús correcto para ir a Auckland,
reconocí por megafonía algo parecido a mi nombre. Me puse en lo peor, me imaginé
deportado y cuando conseguí enterarme de qué pasaba, me dijeron que habían
encontrado mi cartera en el baño. Me hubiese quedado sin tarjeta, dni, carnet
de conducir en mi primer día en Nueva Zelanda. Gracias al que me salvo de una aventura mayúscula.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">La primera noche en Nueva Zelanda la pasé en el Newton Lodge donde
conocí a los primeros españoles: Jordi y a Carlos pero por poco tiempo ya que el
resto de la semana tenía apalabrado couchsurfing con Luis, un mexicano
residente en Narrow Neck, uno de los mejores barrios de Auckland. Aunque para
ir al centro tengas que caminar la larga Lake Road y coger un ferry por 6 $ el
trayecto, mereció mucho la pena. Era mi primera experiencia de Couchsurfing y
tenía un poco de miedo, para que negarlo, pero con él me sentí como en casa,
nos contamos nuestras historias, aprendí bastante de él y de sus primeras
experiencias en NZ. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Increíble la cata de tequilas que me ofreció y con la que descubrí
que lo que bebemos en chupitos en España nada tiene que ver con el tequila. Uno
de los días salimos a correr hasta Mount Victoria (un cono volcánico con unas
vistas espectaculares de la Auckland nocturna) cuando aún era de noche y por fin llegó el momento del primer baño en el Pacífico, en
la playa de Narrow Neck Beach. Quedó pendiente el yoga, seguro que para la
próxima me animo.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"> No negaré que a pesar de
conocer a Luis, esa semana fue dura y me pasaba la mitad del día preguntándome
quién me había convencido de plantarme solo en el otro extremo del
planeta. En esa semana también aproveché
para pasar un día en Rangitoto, pasar mi primer fin de semana en Coromandel
conociendo a mucha gente de Couchsurfing y hacer el Free Walking Tour con el
que me convencí de que le iba a dar una oportunidad a la ciudad de Auckland
unos meses cuando mi intención inicial
era bajar a Chistchurch la primera semana. Pero de eso hablaré en el próximo
capítulo. Esperemos que no tarde mucho.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
